Director General of Uruguay Customs receives Alfonso Senior Quevedo medal for his support to Customs Administrations worldwide

At the XX International Congress of the Colombian Federation of Logistics Operators (FITAC), Mr. Enrique Canon, Director General of Uruguay Customs and Chairperson of the WCO Council, was awarded with the Alfonso Senior Quevedo medal.

On October 29 and 30, the annual gathering of international trade logistics operators was held. Over 40 companies, 480 attendees and 40 speakers attended the meeting, including the President of Colombia, Mr. Iván Duque. Operators from Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, the United States, Spain, Panama, Switzerland, Argentina, among others, also attended the event. 

A new Customs Regulation will entry into force this year in Colombia. Because of this, the international trade and logistics industry will have to face far-reaching changes. This meeting aimed at updating and adjusting the necessary actions, taking good practices from other countries as the starting point.

For all these reasons, the meeting gathered the main stakeholders of the international trade and logistics industry, including general and operational managers, heads of department of international trade, and representatives from the public sector.

The Director General of Uruguay Customs and Chairperson of the WCO Council, Mr. Enrique Canon was invited to participate in the panel called ‘The new regional scenario for Customs and the challenges of trade facilitation’

Acknowledgement

Every year, during the event, the Alfonso Senior Quevedo Medal of Merit, is awarded to those people that have transformed trade and have left their mark in the country and worldwide.

This time, Mr. Enrique Canon was awarded this medal in recognition of his work and support to Customs Administrations worldwide, especially in Latin America.

In 2016, the Director General donated the IT System Lucia to the Directorate of Taxes and National Customs (DIAN) of Colombia. This system is a key tool for controlling the import, export and transit operations of goods. It has been designed in modules, which makes it possible to adapt it or integrate it to other existing IT systems.

During the medal ceremony, FITAC thanked Mr. Canon for his support “to make the WCO Picard program a success in Colombia, and in other Latin America countries. We thank you for still believing in us, in professionalizing our Customs Administration, so that we can have a standardized Customs systems, such as the one the WCO has been working on”.

Mr. Enrique Canon was deeply grateful for this distinction, and reassured his wish to see “Latin America advancing and becoming an example of competitiveness for the whole world. We have the best human resources, our market is the world and we can reach this together”.
