Director General of Uruguay Customs participates in Anti-Fraud and Anti-Contraband Congress

On November 7, the Chairperson of the WCO Council and Director General of Uruguay Customs, Mr. Enrique Canon, participated in the Anti-Fraud and Anti-Contraband Congress (Codefco), in Guatemala City.

The activity was held within the framework of the Year to Combat Contraband and Customs Fraud, and was organized by the Superintendence of Tax Administration of Guatemala (SAT), in coordination with the private sector.

The aim of the event was to create a discussion forum where the public and private sector can address these problems with a comprehensive approach, and where they can also strengthen coordination and develop joint strategies.

SAT Senior Executives, the Ministers of Finance, Defense and Health, and private sector executives, attended the event.

Mr. Canon was invited to participate as a speaker in the panel ‘The role of Customs in combatting Fraud and Contraband’. The objective of the panel was to learn about good practices and the WCO’s view.  

Likewise, Mr. Canon offered SAT assistance, specifically in the Risk Management Module of the IT System LUCIA, in the implementation of the Electronic Seal, and in Management of Digital Files.

During the event, the plan for Guatemala’s policy for preventing and combatting fraud and contraband was presented. They also discussed the role of Customs Administrations in combatting those crimes, and the importance of inter-institutional and international coordination.

Guatemala’s president, Mr. Jimmy Morales participated in the closing ceremony. He highlighted the importance of combatting those crimes and stated that ‘Guatemalans are responsible for leading our country, with strong, transparent and efficient institutions’. Finally, he presented statistics of seizures carried out by Guatemala Customs between 2015 and 2018.
